Painted Desert and Petrified Forest

February 26, 2006

If you drive east on US I-40 from Flagstaff, AZ, you can take the exit for the Petrified Forest National Park. This will put you on a loop through the Painted Desert (see map below,) and then you will cross route 40 and head south through the Petrified Forest and end up at AZ route 180. If you follow this west, it will bring you back to I-40.

There are several viewing points along the road through the park.
At the southern end of the road, near AZ route 180, is the Rainbow Forest Museum and the Petrified Forest Gift Shop.
